FRESNO, Calif. - Eric Battles of the Fresno State men's cross country team was named an Emerging Scholar by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Monday.
Battles, a second team All-WAC honoree last season, was one of 60 sophomores nationwide to receive the award from Phi Kappa Phi. Battles earned the recognition based upon his academic performance, leadership and service, as well as a personal statement.
"It's an honor to be recognized by such a selective group," said Battles.
The Fresno native is majoring in political science and is a Smittcamp Family Honors Scholar. Last season, Battles was named an Academic All-WAC honoree.
Battles has been a volunteer with the Big Heroes Program, local high school cross country meets and the Honors College Shadow Days. He is also the men's cross country representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
