FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's basketball teams showed off their skills in Monday's Community Hoops Night in the Save Mart Center before hundreds of the Bulldog faithful.
"I am thankful for everyone who came out to see how team," head men's coach Steve Cleveland said after the showcase. "This is a great group of young men. They have been working very hard in practice and we are looking forward to Wednesday night for our first exhibition game."
The evening started with a half hour practice by the women's team with a focus on shooting, passing and other fundamental work. Head women's coach Adrian Wiggins then introduced his team and led his team through a short five-on-five scrimmage before capping their preview with their 30 1/2 competition. The fun end of session drill ended with Hayley Munro banking a half-court shot soft off the glass.
"This was a great opportunity for us to meet our fans," Wiggins said of the exclusive open practice. "The support we receive from the fans of the Valley play a big part in our success. We have an exciting year a head of us and we look forward to getting the season started."
The men's team also gave a quick glimpse of how they practice with weaves and strong passing sessions that highlighted the defensive commitment of Cleveland's system. With the highlight reels loving the Dogs dunking ability, Cleveland closed by letting his team slam down dunk after dunk.
"For our team to be successful, we have to play the defense that we can," Cleveland said. "Our league is going to be very competitive and we will compete with the primary goal to win a WAC championship."
After the practice sessions, each team took time to meet and sign autographs for their fans in a relaxed environment as the season nears.
