FRESNO Calif. - The Bulldogs head to Berkeley this week as their intense schedule doesn't skip a beat moving from the defending WAC Champions to the defending National Champion California Golden Bears. The `Dogs look to improve yet again as they look forward to a challenging dual meet battle in Berkeley, Calif. The Bulldogs young swimming and diving program continues to grow under head coach Jeanne Fleck and diving coach Taryn Patrick and this week looks to be another opportunity to gain some experience against a tough host.
Scouting the Golden Bears The California Golden Bears swimming and diving team is the defending Pac-10 and NCAA National Champions. Cal's times rank among the top of the charts in nearly every event and they have fared well against every school that they have gone up against this year boasting an undefeated record of 3-0. The Golden Bears are coming off a two week break with their last meet being a relay meet against San Diego State on Oct. 17.
Luke Leads Bulldog Divers Freshman Stacey Luke has proved to be a strong point in the Bulldogs diving squad as she continuously posts competitive scores week in and week out. Luke finished second in the 1-meter dive last Friday against Nevada with a score of 232.50 and was fourth in the 3-meter dive posting a career best score of 252.08. Luke's 3-meter dive scores have gradually improved every meet this season as she continues to strive and is blossoming into one of the WAC's premiere divers.
Yoho "Top Dog" in Freestyle Events Freshman Dani Yoho has solidified her position as Fresno States top freestyle swimmer as she dominated multiple freestyle events last Friday against Nevada. Yoho gave Nevada fits as she posted a time of 24.71 in the 50 freestyle good enough for first place and the coveted nine points that came with it. Yoho also tied for first in the 100 free (54.62) and helped Fresno State claim first in the 400 freestyle relay (339.98). Last Friday she claimed her first victories of her college career.
Dogs Fight Hard, Fall to Defending Champs The Bulldogs swimming and diving team battled Nevada last week in dual meet competition, winning multiple events before conceding 184.5-110.5. The Bulldogs finished first in the 100 backstroke, 50 free, 100 free and the 400 freestyle relay. The win in the 400 free relay by Kat Vietti, Dani Yoho, Stephanie Hatayama and Rayanne Nguyen was the first relay win in dual meet competition by a Bulldog team since the return of the program last season.
