FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog swim team showed up for the final day of the Toshiba Classic in Long Beach Calif., eager to finish off their best invitational performance of the year with a bang.
Coming into the final day of the event the Bulldogs sat in 11th place overall with multiple teams easily within reach making advancing in the standings very much a reality.
As she did in the two previous days of the invite, freshman Brittney Vogel continued her record breaking ways finishing 15th place overall out of 99 swimmers in the 200 breaststroke with a personal record time of 2:19.43, beating her previous lifetime best by nearly three seconds.
"Brittney had an amazing performace this weekend for us," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "She learned a lot, scored a lot of points for us and really stepped up against some of the top swimmers in the country."
Sophomore Heidi Gjoen finished 17th place out of 102 swimmers in the 200 backstroke recording a lightning fast time of 2:01.32, which is a mere six tenths of a second off of her all-time school record(2:00.65) set last year in the WAC Championships.
Senior Mary Tess Taylor dug deep in the final day of the meet putting in a lifetime best time in 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.59, which shatters her old personal best time by two seconds.
Freshman Rayanne Nguyen finished 18th place out of 95 swimmers in the 200 butterfly, recording a time of 2:04.69.
Not only did the `Dogs perform well in individual events but they also posted good times in the relays. The 400 freestyle relay team composed of Stephanie Hatayama, Dani Yoho, Kat Vietti and Gjoen finished 15th out 48 teams recording an impressive time of 3:34.88
"It was a great, great meet for us," said Fleck. "We had a great day today and this meet as a whole will help us out tremendously in preparation for the conference meets."
The `Dogs made their mark amongst some of the best teams in the country finishing 11th overall for the weekend out of 25 teams and showing that they have what it takes to compete at the next level.
The Bulldogs look to ride their "red wave" of momentum from their stellar performance in the Toshiba Classic onto future dual meets and ultimately look to use this experience to put towards a strong performance in the WAC Championships at the end of the year.
"We have a lot of things to look forward to with our team," said Fleck. "We truly are getting better every week and we showed in the Toshiba Classic that we are ready to rise up to any challenge that is put in front of us."
