BOISE, Idaho - The Fresno State women's soccer season came to an end in the first round of the 2009 WAC Tournament with a 2-1 loss to host Boise State. The Bulldogs finished the season 6-13.
"I thought Boise State played a nice game and are a great team," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "I think that we played a very stout first half. We were very defensive, but we were organized and did extremely well on set pieces, which allowed us to go into the half tied, 0-0."
The first half was evenly matched with both teams putting pressure on. The Bulldog defense came up with some huge saves and avoided some close calls.
Junior Bradlee DeShane had the first shot of the game for the Bulldogs.
Defender Kendall VanDine had the only shot on goal in the half. A ball was played wide to her and she ran on taking the shot from outside the 18-yard box. The Boise State goalkeeper came up with the save.
The Broncos outshot the Bulldogs 10-2 in the first half. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel ended the half with six saves after 45 minutes of play the game was tied, 0-0, at halftime.
"In the second half, the plan was to come out and play," said Zwaschka. "We got more dangerous in terms of our play, but the difference in capitalizing on chances hurt us."
Boise State took the lead in the 50th minute with a goal from Erica Parks assisted by Lauren Hickok. Hickok passed the ball to Parks who dribbled down the left sideline slipping the ball to the lower right corner passed Revel. Sophomore Molly Nizzoli had the first shot on goal in the second half for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Bronco goal. DeShane headed a shot toward goal, but the Boise State goalkeeper came up with the save.
Junior Janna Sadowitz scored the equalizing goal in the 88th minute. Revel launched a free kick down field and Sadowitz beat the defender. She then took on the goalkeeper one versus one and scored her third goal of the season.
A few minutes later, Callie Hancock had a close attempt on goal narrowly missing, but just wide of the goal.
The Broncos took the lead, 2-1, after Brandi Hickcox scored off a free kick just outside the 18-yard box.
The Bulldogs tallied five shots against Boise State and three of the shots were on goal. VanDine, Nizzoli, DeShane, Sadowitz and Bianca Lopez all had a shot against the Broncos.
Revel finished the game with eight saves.
Junior Claudia Cardenas led the team in points and goals with 10 and five, respectively. Hancock ended the season with the most shots on the team with 40. Revel had 83 saves and four shutouts on the season.
"We have to look back at this year as a development year," said Zwaschka. "We have a young team, an inexperienced team, and now we can look back and say these players have gotten some great match experience. We have had to take some hard knocks, but that is how we learn."
