Countdown to the First Lacrosse Game: 6 Days

February 7th, 2009 seemed like a near eternity back at the end of August, and now, the countdown is at 6. Six full days remain before we open up our inaugural season as the Fresno State Women's Lacrosse team. As I sit here in the hotel and we near the last sleep before our scrimmage day at Cal, I find less time to reflect upon where we have come from and can only manage to look ahead.
This morning as we jogged out to practice in the fog, you could feel the excitement from the team just by looking at them. This excitement carried through practice and into the afternoon where we had a picnic before loading the bus. Much credited to our seniors on the team, there was a special part about today.
They were given the task of decorating the locker room with a theme for the season and it was to be revealed before we left, I myself could not be more inspired. They have summed up their mission, as well as ours in three words; "Pave the way." This extraordinary group of young women is doing just that and more, and I am so proud to be a part of it. Their hard work and determination on the field, for the community, and most importantly in the classroom, is what is establishing this program now, and what will continue to establish the program for the years to come.
They all ask so much of themselves, and they continue to amaze me each day. They have done more than become successful student-athletes, lacrosse players, or help create this program, they have become role models to the young girls in the Central Valley who are about to embark on the same journey that so many of them have.
Tomorrow, Fresno State Women's Lacrosse will compete against UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Cal, and Stanford, and I look forward to waking up and watching them continue to surprise me as they have the past 5 months. As February 7th draws nearer, I look forward to watching the Fresno State Women's Lacrosse team make history as they run out of the doghouse in Bulldog Stadium. This group of 23 has begun and will continue to create an identity for this program, and everything that they stand for is everything I am honored to be a part of.
