CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Haley Perkins at the plate and Morgan Melloh at the mound led the No. 14/14 Fresno State Bulldogs (4-2) to a huge win over Maryland at the Cathedral City Classic Friday night by a score of 2-1.
Perkins led off the game for the `Dogs with a double to right field. With two outs, Freshman Michelle Moses would hit a single to center field bringing in Perkins from third for a 1-0 Bulldogs lead in the top of the first.
"I was just trying to get on base and a couple of them went farther so that was nice," Perkins said.
The Bulldogs would then get the bases loaded in the top of the third as Caitlin Stiglich would reach on a fielder's choice. Maryland would then walk Michelle Moses and Mallory Perkins and bring Ryane Petersen up to the plate for the `Dogs. An error by the Terps third baseman would score Stligich from third and make it a 2-0 Bulldog lead.
Maryland would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth off a single by Alex Shultz that would score Kerry Hickey from first off a Bulldog error. It would then be 2-1 Fresno State.
With her fifth strikeout on the day vs. pinch hitter Marisha Branson to lead off the bottom of the fifth, Melloh reached 491 in her career and tied Maureen Brady on the Fresno State top 10 career strikeout list.
Morgan would finish with 10 strikeouts on the day and now 496 in her career. She is just four strikeouts away from the 500 career mark and 13 away from tying Melanie Parrent at No. 9 on the career list.
"I just went out there to do my job and let my fielders have my back and we did that today and did a good job," Melloh said.
The starting pitcher for Maryland was Sarah Dooley and she drops to 1-3 on the season and Maryland to 2-6 and snap the Terps two-game winning streak.
Haley Perkins ended the game 3-for-4 with two doubles. As a team, the Bulldogs had eight hits.
