Siebert's Senior Farewell to the Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Taylor Siebert says farewell to the 2009 Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic by finishing in 11th place. Siebert is the lone senior and Selma native, posted 6-over 222 to lead the `Dogs to a sixth place finish. After starting the day tied for 20th, Siebert shot 1-under par 71 to climb up the leaderboard during the final round.
"Taylor played great," said head coach Angie Cates-Moore. "I am so happy that she was able to play well in her final home tournament. Hopefully, she has gained more confidence and will be able to carry this over to San Jose next week," said Cates-Moore.
"I am glad I had a great day today to finish a great memory," said Siebert.
The Bulldogs started the day tied for seventh and carded a team total of 304, which was their lowest round of the tournament. The third round total aided them to ending the day at 51-over par 915 and a sixth place finish.
"As a team, we learned a lot," said Cates-Moore. "We know what we need to do to play better golf after competing in this tournament. Each week to come, we should see steady improvement."
After leading the tournament yesterday, San Francisco slipped to second place after shooting a third round of 302 to finish 28-over. UC Irvine shot a 300 in the final round to nip San Francisco and take first place finishing the tournament at 27-over 891. Long Beach State finished in third after shooting 32-over par 896.
Santa Clara's Miki Ueoka led the majority of the tournament finishing in first place. She carded 7-under par 209 and recorded a tournament high of 13 birdies. Ueoka was follwed by, Long Beach State's Kay Hoey, who has earned medalist honors in three of the five Fresno State hosted tournaments. Alice Kim of UC Davis finished in third place with a score of 3-under par 213. The top three competitors where the only indiviuals to finish under par for the tournament.
Both Louisa Lies (Germany) and Pia Escandon (Mexico) played in front of their parents during the home venue. Lies recorded a total of 227 to finish in 19th place. Escandon competed as an individual and finished the tournament tied for 65th at 36-over par.
Lindi Covarrubias tied for 24th with two back-to-back scores of 76 to finish 14-over par. Chelsea Czinski (77-78 - 814--236) tied for 42nd and Hali Coppin (78-78 -81--237) tied for 46th place.
Covarrubias and Coppin led the team in birdies with six apiece.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The Fresno State women's golf team will be back on the road when they play at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational on March 2-3 in San Jose, Calif, The men's golf team will be host to the Fresno State Lexus Classic on March 9-10 at Belmont Country Club.
