FRESNO, Calif. - The `Dogs had every reason to be proud Friday night in San Antonio as freshman Heidi Gjoen (Oslo, Norway) qualified for a final event the second night in-a-row in the 100 backstroke following a lifetime best and fourth place finish in the preliminaries, a time that is eight-tenths off the school record. She topped opponents that included Nevada, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona.
"We had another great morning to start and tonight is very exciting," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "Heidi is currently the third fastest in the 100 backstroke in school history and is very close to breaking the record. It was an awesome swim and an awesome night."
Many swimmers started the day with best times that would allow them to swim a second time this evening. Junior Mary Tess Taylor swam a high time in the 100 breaststroke and placed 21st, a mid-fleet placement for the first-time conference championship swimmer. Taylor went 1:06.76 in the heat c finals and moved up to 18th.
Sophomore flier Cindy Engle (Edwards, Colo.) placed a similar 24th in the 100 butterfly preliminaries to earn a lifetime best finish in the finals of 1:01.24.
Once again, the Bulldogs swam their third night of relays, swimming the 400 medley relay in 4:04.06, a best time for the team.
