"Our success has not been a continual series of victories. We have had a number of devastating setbacks; how these are handled is the making of a great team... winning does not happen in straight lines."
- Clive Woodward, after leading England to Rugby World Cup victory
Every team has their own measuring stick for success and improvement and I am slowly learning how "success" will be defined for the first ever lacrosse team at Fresno State. I feel that God has blessed me in a number of different ways by giving me the opportunity to play this year. The quote above from Woodward explains that success can not AND should not be seen as only a check under the win column.
It states that sometimes teams have setbacks, in our case we are working to overcome the obstacles that are often viewed as "setbacks". Coach Behme along with our two outstanding assistant coaches (Buck and Gotham) have taken what I call a "foreign" game to the Valley and taught it not only to 23 Fresno State students but to a whole community.
To add to this large task they have done it in under six months. The overcoming of our obstacles is giving a strong establishment and base for a great team.
This weekend we made our way up to Cal where we played against outstanding teams that have years of experience under their belt. There was little emotion shown on the ride up to Berkeley but as soon as we stepped on the field that all changed. I can say proudly our team never once dropped our heads nor did we give up. It gave a whole new meaning to being a Bulldog.
There are only four days left until the opening game and the nerves and excitement keep me up late at night and wake me early in the morning. I look forward to Saturday at 1p.m. where the community can come together and participate in making history. I look forward to seeing my family and for the ones who can't make it I love you and I know you would be here if you could! I want to end with this quote...
Sports do not build character. They reveal it."
- Haywood Hale Broun
