FRESNO, Calif. - The college Coaches Association of America released the 2008-09 women's team Speedo Academic All-American rankings Friday on collegeswimming.com, which featured the Fresno State swimming and diving team with a cumulative team GPA of 3.10.
Grade data was collected by the association from teams across the country and ranked into lists by division. 184 women's teams made the list by earning a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall 2009 semester, including the Bulldogs in the Division I category.
"I'm very excited the girls are starting off our new program with a team GPA that is getting recognized by the college swim coaches association," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "I am confident our grades will only go up after we get a group of girls who are used to training and swimming. It was a lot of time on top of school and I am proud of how they balanced it without really knowing the time commitment. I feel we will go up every year as we get used to the workload."
Fresno State's team grade point average included academic performances by both swimmers and divers and together had a 3.10 GPA to earn a spot on the rankings.
The college Coaches Association gathers grade information every semester from college teams and will again release recognition, rankings and awards following the spring semester.
"Join the State - Fresno State" -The Fresno State swimming and diving team will face WAC foe San Jose State Saturday, Feb. 7, at noon for the third and final meeting with the Spartans before the WAC Championships.
