Bulldogs Prevail Against 49ers

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 15 Fresno State women's tennis team notched its eighth win of the year against a ranked opponent, with a 6-1 victory over No. 47 Long Beach State on Saturday in Long Beach, Calif.
The Bulldogs came out strong in doubles to earn the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
The nation's top-ranked doubles combo of juniors Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova handed Long Beach State's Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks an 8-1 loss. Meanwhile on court two, seniors Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe collected a 9-8 (7-4) victory over Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton.
No. 19 Gloria ruined Senior Day for Grady, by defeating her, 6-4, 6-2 in singles.
"She's a pretty solid player, and she wanted to play well since this was her last match at home," Gloria said. "I played well from the back. I was hitting my ground strokes and came up to the net when I could."
Gloria's victory clinched the match for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs also won matches on courts two, three, five and six. No. 28 Petukhova won a three-set 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 match against Rachel Manasse. No. 89 Renata Kucerkova knocked off Armstrong, 6-3, 6-3. On court five, Laura Pola recorded a 7-6 (8-6) victory over Julie Luzar. Bruna Paes defeated Lisa Sutton, 6-3, 6-2.
The Bulldogs are now 10-5 and have won seven of their last eight matches.
Fresno State will next be in action on Monday against Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. at 1:30 p.m.. The Bulldogs return home on April 11 to host a WAC triple-header against Louisiana Tech, Utah State and New Mexico State at the Wathen Tennis Center.
