FRESNO, Calif. - Spring volleyball has started and the competition proved to Coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell that there are great things to come for the Fresno State volleyball team.
All of the spring matches were played by rally scoring to 25 and the best two-out-of-three sets will win the match. Each match was also timed. The event was held at the North Gym at Fresno State.
Fresno State began the day with a match vs. Fresno (Pacific). The `Dogs came out biting and split the match by winning the first set and losing the second, 26-28. Due to time constraints, the teams were not able to start a third set.
The Bulldogs took on Sacramento State wining the match. The San Diego State match began at 11:30 a.m., the `Dogs also split by winning the first set and losing the second 29-31. The Bulldogs concluded the day sweeping the match against Cal State Fullerton.
"We have been looking forward to this spring," said Netherby-Sewell. "We wanted to implement our own techniques and tactics. With that, we've been pleased in the last month and a half at the progression and this tournament was a chance to showcase that. We saw our team buy into our coaching philosophy and it's beginning to show. We are pleased with the strides this team has taken towards being a better program."
Fresno State had a number of great performances on the day.
Team Leaders:
Assists: Lisa Gera, 49
Kills: Baylee Platt, 28
Blocks: Lauren Berger, 15
Digs: Meghan Moss, 27
Aces: Kelly Mason, 2
Sophomore Lauren Berger was pleased with team's effort during the first spring tournament.
"This is our first spring tournament with the new coaches and new techniques," said Berger. "It was great to see our development."
After having a team-high of digs, sophomore Meghan Moss felt as though her team embraced the opportunity given to them.
"This was a great opportunity to show people what we have learned," said Moss. "We took what the coaches have been teaching us and applied it to our game and a lot of things worked."
Next week Fresno State will head down south to participate in a sand tournament on April 4 hosted by Long Beach State. The beach tournament features teams of four and doubles teams. Other schools competing are Pepperdine, UC Irvine, Montana, Arkansas, Cal Poly, San Diego State and USC.
The `Dogs will be practicing all week on sand to try and get used to the atmosphere and conditions there will be in southern California.
"I'm excited for next week," said Netherby-Sewell. "I think the beach is the best place to learn ball control and smart volleyball. Once we get this aspect of our game down, I'm anxious to see what our team will do during next seasons' competition."
