FRESNO, Calif. - Bahvik Patel performed well in the first round of the Western Intercollegiate, par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Course on Sunday. Patel shot a 68 to finish the day tied for first along with Colrado's Pat Grady. Fresno State is also atop of the team standings after 18 holes of the 63nd annual men's golf tournament.
"The team as a whole played very well,"head coach Mike Watney said. "Bhavik is so poised for a freshman. Even though I recruited him, he still amazes me. This is a tough course as you can see by the scores and Bhavik still hits it solid when others are wilting under the pressure."
The Bulldogs have a 2-under par 278 total after the first day of play. Colorado is second at 283. Oregon and Michigan State are tied for third at 10-over par 290 in the 18-team field.
The `Dogs Michael Gideon and Bryan Hogan both finished the day tied with two other competitors for third shooting 69's after the first round. Grant Doverspike tied for 15th place with a score of 72. Todd Angel finished tied for 61st with a total of 77 (+7).
"Bryan Hogan had a dramatic up and down round in which he sunk a wedge from 138 yards," said Watney. "Michael Gideon is starting to regain the form he had when he won last year in Bakersfield."
The 54-hole tournament starts with 18 holes on March 30. Live scoring can be viewed on www.golfstat.com. Tee times have a shotgun start beginning at 9:00 am.
