Bulldogs Turn Away Rainbow Wahine

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 15 Fresno State extended its winning streak to eight matches with a 6-1 victory over Hawai'i on Friday in Las Cruces, N.M.
The Bulldogs came out focused and swept doubles, to take a 1-0 lead. Top-ranked Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova knocked off Sophie Kobuch and Aglae Van den Bergh, 8-1. No. 15 Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe recorded an 8-5 victory over Alyssa Nafarrete and Ellen Linsenbolz. Laura Pola and Danon Beatty defeated Melinda Wong and Anja-Vanessa Peter, 8-6.
In singles, Rowe and Kucerkova were on top of their game. Rowe defeated Van den Bergh, 6-1, 6-1, and No. 69 Kucerkova handed Peter a 6-0, 6-1 loss.
"Renata and Tinesta played very solid today against an improved Hawai'i team," head coach Simon Thibodeau said.
No. 17 Gloria was also victorious for the Bulldogs, with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Linsenbolz. No. 29 Petukhova beat Sophie Kobuch, 6-1, 7-5, while freshman Pola picked up a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Wong.
"We need to remain focused and keep good habits to be sharp in the WAC and NCAA," Thibodeau said.
The win gives Fresno State a 17-5 overall record and 6-0 in the WAC. The Bulldogs play again later today at 1 p.m. PT against Idaho and tomorrow against No. 36 Boise State at 9 a.m. PT.
The WAC Tournament runs from April 23-25 in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
