FRESNO, Calif.- While most Fresno State students were vacationing on spring break last week, the Fresno State women's lacrosse team was back East playing three games in the New York, Maryland and Washington D.C.
During the three-game, six day road trip the Bulldog women's lacrosse student-athletes received a valuable education off the field as they were able to tour some of the nations historic sites in our nation's capital. Coach Sue Behme knows giving her team an opportunity to see historical sites is very important.
"We were able to take them to D.C. and we stayed in one of the most haunted hotels in Maryland," Behme said. "They learned a lot about the culture and were able to eat the Maryland crabs, which was new for some of them. That is important. It's an educational experience too for these guys. I think they really appreciate and cherish that. A lot of them have never been there. That was great."
For senior Lorileigh Chung, the experience to visit Washington D.C. was one she will never forget.
"It was amazing," she said. "We saw stuff that I have never seen before. We took a lot of pictures and we got to see the capital, Washington Monument, the Korean War Memorial and the World War II Memorial. We were happy to experience that. It was an amazing experience that will help us in the long run."
Seeing the Korean War Memorial had extra meaning for Chung since her grandfather fought in the way.
"It was touching to see that," she said.
This trip was the first time Chung had been to the East coast and she said afterwards that's he wanted to go back and visit longer, even possibly live there. On the field, the Bulldogs played in three vastly different weather climates. In Tuesday's game at St. Bonaventure it was 20 degrees outside and snow on the ground. At Johns Hopkins, in Baltimore, MD., it was sunny and in the 70's while in Washington D.C. it rained during the game.
"Join the State - Fresno State"- The Fresno State women's lacrosse team closes out its first-season at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament on Thursday, Apr. 23 at Stanford. The Bulldogs play at 1 p.m.
