FRESNO, Calif. - Head volleyball coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell and Fresno State announced that Taylor Horton signed a National Letter of Intent and Kelli Parker signed an Athletic Aid Agreement to attend school and play volleyball at Fresno State beginning in the 2009-10 season.
"Our 2009 recruiting class might find me more eager and excited than any in my career," Netherby-Sewell said. "With the inspiring progressions that our current student-athletes are making, combined with a new class of athletes who have so much personality and potential, this fall is sure to be a season full of unexpected surprises!"
Horton hails from Notre Dame High School in Chatsworth, Calif. She is a three-time varsity letterwinner in volleyball and was named first team All-Mission league in 2006 and second team all-league in 2007 and 2008. Prepvb.com named her an All-American her sophomore season.
Horton's two club teams each qualified for the Junior Olympics. She also participated in track and field and was in student government.
"We were very impressed with Taylor in her junior year," Netherby-Sewell added. "She's an old soul with a wonderful energy about her. Taylor was born an athlete. Her mom was an NCAA Division-I tennis player; her father was an American Gladiator and both of her brothers play football at USC. Her size and offensive ball control will be a much needed asset on this team. Taylor has played club for some of the most disciplined programs in the country. She'll compete for a position on the right or left in her freshman year."
Parker is a transfer, having spent the last two season's playing basketball at Santa Clara. At Santa Clara, she played in just four games as a freshman before missing the rest of the season with an injury. Her sophomore season she saw action in 11 games and averaged 16.9 minutes.
A 2007 graduate of Lemoore High School, she played volleyball, basketball, ran track and was a diver. Parker was the three-time MVP of the volleyball team, two-time MVP of the track team and the 2007 MVP of the basketball team. She played both club volleyball and basketball.
"Kelli is our lucky surprise," Netherby-Sewell added. "Kelli was a former standout from Lemoore who chose to follow her basketball career out of high school, though she had opportunity to play volleyball or pursue a track and field scholarship. Fortunately for us, the highly-recruited athlete has turned her attention and passion back to volleyball. Kelli is as eager as any of my recruits have been to get onto the court and train. She's full of personality and will be a fun player to watch. Besides the fact that Kelli can dunk a basketball, her speed, agility and strong arm will put her in a position to make an impact in the WAC this fall. We were fortunate to have found her."
The two will join Cecilia Agraz and Marissa Brand who signed in the fall, as newcomers to the 2009 team.
