FRESNO, Calif. - The final score wasn't what the Fresno State women's lacrosse team hoped for but the noticeable improvement the Bulldogs made from the first day of practice to their final game of the season was noticeable by all who followed the Bulldogs this year.
On Thursday, Fresno State ended its season, losing 19-2 to Oregon in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament at the University of Stanford. After the game, Oregon fans and Cal coaches told Sue Behme and her staff that the team had improved immensely since a preseason scrimmage at Cal on Feb. 1
"It's always challenging losing games," Behme said. "We did everything we could do to focus on the little details that would help us get better. People are amazed by the improvement we have shown. We made history on all levels in women's lacrosse this year."
The Bulldogs scored their two goals in the last eight minutes of the game. The first one came from Heather Jack with 8:20 left in the contest. Jack finished the year leading the team in goals scored with 11. Emily Erwin recorded the assist and was second on the team in total points with nine. Callie Seidman scored the Bulldogs final goal with 37 seconds left.
"We scored two really great goals," Behme said. "For the first time this season we scored on a fast break attack on Heather's goal. Callie did a great job finding the back of the net on her goal too. We were better this game than the first time we played Oregon. We worked as hard as we could. We did a better job on ground balls and a better job on draw controls in the second half."
