Slugfest Saturday in Boise

BOISE, Idaho - Fresno State swept Boise State in the doubleheader on Saturday at Mountain Cove Softball Stadium in Boise, Idaho to take the series. The `Dogs improved to 31-18 overall and 13-5 in the WAC while Boise State falls to 21-25 and 4-13.
There were 11 home runs between the two teams combined for the day in two high scoring games of 10-9 and 11-8 in eight innings.
Game One - Fresno State 10, Boise State 9
The first pitch of the game from Allie Crump to Haley Perkins, Perkins drilled to the shortstop for an infield single. Perkins recorded her 269 career hit to tie Nina Lindenberg on the Fresno State career list at No. 6.
Boise State took the early lead again in the bottom of the first. A three-run home run by Christina Capobianco extended the lead to 4-0 against Morgan Melloh.
A solo home run by Ashley Viers-Gordillo off of Mackenzie Oakes gave the Broncos a 5-0 lead after one.
Ryane Petersen's first at bat in the series was a good one, as she hit her second season and career home run to left field to get the Bulldogs on the board.
Perkins got her second hit in her second at bat to pass Lindenberg and pick up her fourth hit in the series.
A triple to right field with one out in the third by Haley Gilleland drove in Phipps and Perknis as the `Dogs got two back to cut the lead to 5-3.
After back-to-back walks to Lisamarie Coronado and Nicole Angene with one out in the fourth, a three-run home run by Phipps gave the `Dogs the first lead of the day at 6-5.
"I just tried to carry over from yesterday to today," Phipps said. "The whole team was hitting so we were just feeding off of each other."
Boise State took the lead back with a two-run home run by Kelsey Sweeney to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
A walk to Gilleland then an infield single by Stiglich sent Gilleland to third with no outs in the fifth. A single to left by Moses scored one to tie the game. Then a ground out by Angene drove in an RBI for an 8-7 lead.
Phipps then singled to right to clear the bases and drive in two more. It was the first three-hit game of the season for Phipps.
Boise State had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with no outs but the `Dogs got three-straight outs to keep the three-run lead.
Viers-Gordillo hit a two out, two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 10-9.
Oakes would leave and Melloh would re-enter to strikeout the only batter she faced to end the game and pick up her second save of the season and the fifth of her career, to move her to third all-time at Fresno State in the category.
Phipps led the team with five RBI's in the game.
Oakes got the win, her seventh of the season. The `Dogs picked up their 30th win of the season.
Game Two - Fresno State 11, Boise State 8 (8 innings)
Perkins led off game two continuing to hit the ball well with a double to right center. A two-run home run then by Michelle Moses gave the `Dogs the early lead in the top of the first, 2-0. It was the eighth home run of the season for Moses, a team-high.
Boise State got one back off of Melloh in the bottom of the first off of a bloop single to left field.
Back-to-back hits by Alexis Lujan and Coronado led off the top of the second. Coronado scored off a single by Phipps and an error by the Bronco shortstop for a 3-1 Bulldog lead.
Moses singled in the third and scored on a Bronco error on Lujan's at bat. Lujan scored on a double to center by Coronado. Coronado then scored on a two-run home run by Angene.
A Kathy Cox solo home run to center cut the Bulldog lead to 7-2 in the third.
BSU added one more run in the fourth but Fresno State still had the 7-3 lead.
Fresno State would get a run back in the top of the sixth with back-to-back hits by Moses, Petersen and Stiglich.
The Broncos got a two-out rally going in the bottom of the sixth, as they got one to cut the lead to 8-4 with one inning left.
For the second-straight game, Boise State scored in the bottom of the seventh, as Cox hit her second home run of the game, a solo shot to left center to lead off the inning to get the Broncos within three.
A two-run triple with one out in the bottom of the seventh got the Broncos to within one and Melloh was replaced by Oakes in the circle.
A sacrifice fly to center field tied the game at 8-8 and sent the game to extra innings.
It was the 11th extra inning game of the year for the `Dogs who had a 5-5 record in those games entering this one.
With one out, a solo home run by Petersen gave the `Dogs a one-run advantage in the eighth. It was her second home run of the day.
A passed ball by the Bronco catcher sent one more Bulldog run in then a single by Phipps to right center drove in another for an 11-8 lead.
Oakes picked up her second win of the day and her eighth of the season.
"I thought both Morgan and I worked together really well and I fed off of her," Oakes said. "It was huge for us to get the sweep today."
The `Dogs broke their season-high they set yesterday with 18 hits in the game.
