FRESNO, Calif. - The future of Fresno State women's lacrosse continues to get brighter. As Bulldog coach Sue Behme coached her team in the inaugural season this year, she along with her staff was busy preparing for the future. On Monday, Behme announced the signing of three high school student-athletes from three different states to National Letters of Intents.
Including the fall signing period, Behme has now signed eight student-athletes who will enroll in school for the 2009-10 academic year. The eight student-athletes will come to Fresno State from seven different states (California, Oregon, Ohio, New York, Georgia, Colorado and Maryland).
Signing this spring is Margaret Wolford from Kilbourne High School in Columbus, Ohio, Alexis Rawlings from Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colo. and Sara Weber from Tesoro High School in Coto De Caza, Calif.
Wolford is a low-attacker who earned Honorable Mention All-America and First-Team Ohio Capital Conference honors. She was also first-team all-district and the Columbus Dispatch Athlete of the Week along with her schools MVP.
"Margaret is a great addition to our in-coming 2009 class," Behme said. "She is the all-time leading career leader in goals, assists, and points at Worthington Kilbourne High School. Margaret is athletic and strong. She has the ability to attack the goal but also set her teammates up to finish. She is a team player and will bring needed attacking power to our team."
Rawlings is a midfielder who was selected for the Colorado selection of the High School Girls' Annual National Tournament in Maryland, 2006-08. In 2008, she was a First-Team Colorado All-League selection, all-city selection and All-Colorado Honorable Mention.
"Alexis brings athleticism and speed to our program in the midfield," Behme said. "She has a great attitude and wants to be pushed on the next level. She is an exciting addition to our first recruiting class."
Weber is a midfielder and played for the Pacific Team in the High School Girls' Annual National Tournament in 2008. She earned first-team all-county honors in 2007 and 2008 and was Tesoro's MVP 2006-08.
"Sara is coachable and athletic," Behme said. "She can be dynamic and I believe flew under the recruiting radar a bit. She gets all of the little details done on the field that many people that are not familiar with lacrosse would not notice. Sara's positive attitude and work ethic is exceptional."
With the addition of these signees, Behme is excited about the future of women's lacrosse in the Central Valley. Along with her roster for next year, the community has also caught on as people have come out for the free clinics the coaching staff has put on throughout the course of the year.
The next clinic is May 9 and the registration deadline is May 1.
"We are making great strides in a very short period of time," Behme said. "We are proud of where we started and what we have accomplished in nine months. We are moving forward in a positive direction and we are continuing to help develop and support the over 200 new girls' lacrosse players in Fresno. This is the beginning of a lacrosse explosion in Fresno and the Central Valley. Our community is excited and I am so very grateful for everyone's positive support. I can't wait for local player's to develop so we can recruit locally as well as the further development of the players throughout Calif."
