`Dogs Split with Gauchos

FRESNO, Calif. - In non-conference action at Bulldog Diamond Monday night, the No. 22 Fresno State softball team split a doubleheader with UC Santa Barbara. Fresno State took game one, 3-1 before UCSB earned the 1-0 victory in the finale. Fresno State is now 24-16 overall and remains at 6-3 in the WAC.
Game One - No. 22 Fresno State 3, UC Santa Barbara 1
Fresno State continued its win streak vs. non-conference opponents and extended it to six with the 3-1 victory in game one.
Melloh picked up her 18th win of the season after being named WAC Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day. Melloh ended with 10 strikeouts to total 750 in her career.
Fresno State had eight hits in the game, two each by Haley Gilleland and Alexis Lujan. It was the fourth-straight game in which Gilleland had two hits and the third multi-hit game of Lujan's career.
The `Dogs got all three runs in the bottom of the fifth. A base hit by Lisamarie Coronado began the inning. Brooke Phipps then reached base on an error by the Gauchos second baseman.
Mallory Perkins kept the rally going with a single up the middle to load the bases for the top of the lineup. With one out, the second hit of the game for Gilleland was to left field to score Phipps from third for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
A fielder's choice sent Michelle Moses to first and all runners were safe as Mallory Perkins scored to extend the lead to 2-0.
The final run came off a sacrifice fly by Lujan as Haley Perkins scored.
Melloh retired 18-straight batters between the first and second hits.
UCSB got one run back in the top of the seventh after double then a single down the right field line but the rally ended short for the Gauchos as the `Dogs took game one.
Melloh allowed one run on three hits. MeLinda Matsumoto got the loss for UCSB as she allowed eight hits and one earned run.
Game Two - UCSB 1, Fresno State 0
UC Santa Barbara pulled out a 1-0 victory in game two to split the series on the night.
UCSB got a run in the top of the fifth off a Bulldog error as they took a 1-0 lead after four and a half.
The `Dogs got two hits in the game off of UCSB winning pitcher Krista Cobb, one by Haley Perkins and another by Caitlin Stiglich. Perkins' hit gave her No. 257 in her career, tying her for seventh in the Bulldog career list with Amanda Scott and in the WAC record books also at No. 7 with Scott and Scia Maumausolo of CSUN.
Melloh recorded another 12 strikeouts in the second game, earning her 300th strikeout on the season moving her to No. 7 on the single-season list. She now has 762 in her career and is just nine shy of tying Robin Mackin for third on the career list at 771. It was her 18th game of the season with 10 or more strikeouts.
Melloh allowed four hits and the run was unearned. She is now 18-12 on the year.
Fresno State heads south to Ruston, La., to face Louisiana Tech in a three-game WAC series beginning Friday, April 10.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The `Dogs travel to Louisiana Tech to take on the Lady Techsters April 10-11. The `Dogs return home to battle WAC rival Nevada April 17-18. The `Dogs and Wolf Pack play Friday night at 6 pm and close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon starting at 1 pm. Friday is Softball History Night and former softball student-athletes will be on hand to sign autographs. Every fan will also receive FREE ice cream. There will be a poster contest for Fresno State students and the student with the best poster will win an iPod Nano. Saturday is Senior Day as the softball seniors are honored for their dedication to Fresno State softball.
