Swimmers and Divers Earn Academic All-WAC

FRESNO, Calif. - Eight of Fresno State's swimmers and divers received notification of Academic All-WAC honors on Thursday after the Western Athletic Conference announced the 2008-09 winter sports honorees that included men's and women's basketball, gymnastics, men's and women's indoor track and swimming and diving teams.
Sophomore swimmers Cindy Engle (Edwards, Colo.), Stephanie Hatayama (Fresno, Calif.), juniors Stephanie Saunders (Castro Valley, Calif.) and Kasey Madden (Fresno, Calif.), and seniors Rebecca Sussman (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Megan Wood (Fresno, Calif.) along with divers junior Blair Hopkins (Fresno, Calif.) and sophomore Jaime Krause (Fresno, Calif.) earned the Academic All-WAC honors after obtaining at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and competing in at least 50 percent of season contests. In addition, eligibility for the honor includes completion of at least one academic year.
Engle, Nutrition major, was a leader for the `Dogs as a flier and individual medley competitor this season. Hatayama, a sprint freestyle swimmer and Biology major, earned a top time in the 100 freestyle event for the Bulldogs this season, 53.73. Other areas of study include Saunders in Animal Science/Pre-Vet, Madden in Women's Studies, and Sussman and Wood in Kinesiology. Krause holds one of the top team grade point averages in her Nursing curriculum, while Hopkins, a top 3-meter diver, is working on a degree in Economics.
The return of swimming and diving to the university this season also marks the return of Fresno State's representation of this WAC honor in the sport, which honored a total 307 student-athletes for all winter sports. Bulldogs have not boasted the honor in swimming and diving since the 2003-04 season.
