FRESNO, Calif. - The 2009 new and improved Fresno State volleyball camps ended on Friday with a successful week of teaching basic and advanced skills for boys and girls of all ages.
Approximately 25 campers showed up for each of the three camps. All camps were held at the North Gym on the Fresno State campus. The camps were taught by many members of the 2009 Bulldog volleyball team, head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell and assistant coaches Ed Jackson and Alanna Jackson.
The first camp ran Monday-Wednesday and was a girl's all-skills camp for students entering grades 8-12. Campers were trained on all major skills for efficiency, control and power.
The second camp, the Junior Bulldog Camp, ran Thursday and Friday. 23-24. The skill-based camp taught basic movement and contact skills while touching on strategy.
"Working with the Jr. Bulldogs was really fun," said junior Kelly Mason. "I was coaching 4th and 5th graders and I was able to start with the basics of passing, setting, hitting and serving. It was fun to see their improvement over a couple of days. When you are coaching you get to help them learn and it's a fun atmosphere. I enjoyed spending time with them."
The Boys and Girls Setting and Attacking Clinic also ran Thursday and Friday and taught campers specific setting and attacking skills that are used by Division I and professional volleyball players.
"The setting and attacking camp was pretty advanced as we taught them our quick sets and our whole offense," said senior Lisa Gera. "It was really fun! It was a good chance to get to know some of our fans and those who support us."
The Fresno State volleyball team opens the 2009 season on Aug. 28, as they host the Fresno State Invitational with Pacific and UW-Green Bay at the Save Mart Center.
