FRESNO, Calif. - Taylor Horton is one of four newcomers to Lauren Netherby-Sewell's 2009 team (three freshmen, one transfer). Horton and the Bulldogs have one week of practice down and with just one week until the home and season opener in the Fresno State Invitational on Aug. 28, Horton sat down with www.gobulldogs.com to answer a few questions.
Horton, a right-side/outside hitter from Chastworth, Calif., hails from Notre Dame High School, the same high school that produced junior libero Meghan Moss on the Bulldog volleyball team.
Gobulldogs.com: Describe your first week of practice.
Taylor Horton: This week has been a big change from what I am used too. There is clearly a higher level of intensity and more is expected of us. We are being pushed to our limits and we are striving every day to get better and better. We can't take any plays off.
GB: What has been your favorite thing about practice so far or your favorite moment?
TH: My favorite moment was after an intense talk from coach and Kelly Leonardo sang that `it was a great day to be a `Dog.' It changed our whole mood and everyone was pumped.
GB: How has the transition been from high school to Division I?
TH: The intensity has significantly risen and every play you are on your toes and going all out. There is no time for breaks or lack of focus at all.
GB: What has been the biggest surprise for you in camp?
TH: My biggest surprise was the small technical changes that I have learned within one week that I haven't learned in the last three years of playing so the coaches are really making some big changes fast.
GB: What are you most looking forward to this season?
TH: I'm looking forward to making the travel team and playing volleyball across the nation.
GB: What does it mean for you to be a Bulldog? TH: To be a Bulldog to me means giving maximum effort and being selfless and to get better every day.
GB: Why did you choose Fresno State? TH: I chose Fresno because it's a Division I school in California and I wanted to stay relatively close to home and I really enjoyed the time I spent with the girls here on my official.
GB: What do you want to tell the fans about why they should come watch the team next week in the home opener?
TH: I want the fans to come out to experience the new Bulldogs and they are going to be surprised when they see how many changes this program has made within the last year.
GB: You get to practice at the Save Mart Center for the first time next week, are you excited?
TH: I'm so excited. Just seeing the new court from the bleachers gets me pumped so being on the court is going to be awesome.
