FRESNO, Calif. -- - More than 350 runners turned out Saturday morning for the 45th Annual Watermelon Run hosted by Fresno State.
The traditional preseason race featured two distances, the 2- and 4-mile events, with multiple age divisions.
Two-hundred sixty-three people competed in the first event of the day, the 2-mile. Sean Marzolf beat out the rest of the competitors to win the overall race and the men's 19-25 division, timing in at 9:34.
Germay Tesfai took second overall and first in the men's 15-18 section at 9:38. The third divisional winner to cross the finish line was Michael Moffett of the men's 45-55 division with a time of 10:34. The men's 14 and under winner, Robert Leija, scored the next section title clocking a 10:40.
Macy Bricks was the women's top finisher in the 2-mile, timing an 11:08 with Chelsea Janzen just one tick back at 11:09 for the top two finishes in the women's 15-18. Hagen Reedy topped the 14 and under division at 11:14. Allison Gonzalez won the women's 19-25 section at 11:25.
In the day's second and final event, the 4-mile race, Justin Vilhauer, of the men's 15-18 division, won the race with a finish at 19:30. Former Fresno State cross country runner, Roosevelt Cook, took second overall and first in the 25-35 section at 19:59. Erick Garcia and Paul Zwama, two Bulldogs running unattached in the preseason event, crossed the line together at 20:20 overall and first in the 19-25 division. Other Fresno State student-athletes Frank Sanders, Danny Vartanian, Eric Battles, Elijah Carillo, Max Hernandez, Andrew Campbell and Mitchell Pfyl all raced unaffiliated and in the Top 25.
Ray Knerr was the third sectional winner, placing 20th overall and first in the men's 45+ grouping, with a time of 21:30. Tyrus DeMouter was just one place back of Knerr for the win in the men's 35-45 section.
In the women's 4-mile, Bulldog Roxanne Sellick running unattached, crossed first at 23:13, winning the women's 19-25 division. Lindsie Etherton of the women's 15-18 group finished just behind Sellick for the section win at 23:18. Dina Rosenthal won the 35-45 section for the women's third division win at 24:45.
Marissa McPhail, Veronica Paredes, Paloma Dominguez, Stevie Brumwell, Jennifer Hernandez, Jenna Rogers, Jocelyn Oviedo and Sasha Souder, Fresno State's student-athletes, also competed unaffiliated in the preseason race.
"The Watermelon Run was a great opportunity to get the community involved," said cross country coach Sean McManus. "Having both the 2 and 4 mile races gave kids from the local high schools, students from the university and anyone the community a chance to participate in our sport before the season starts."
The Bulldog cross country team officially begins the season at the Nevada Twilight on September 4 in Reno, Nev.
