FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team had four shots on goal and several close attempts, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs lost to Sacramento State, 2-0. The Bulldogs have one more non-conference game before league play begins on Oct. 4. Fresno State is 2-7 this season.
"I thought man for man we were just as good as this team," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "Our strategy for the second half was to match up and unfortunately we were a little flat when needed to dig deep and find that little extra strut. Credit to Sacramento State they found a way to make sure that we didn't get back into the game and made it difficult for us. We had opportunities to be dangerous and it sort of fluttered away. We are going to keep working towards getting the results we are capable of."
The Hornets scored first in the eighth minute of the first half. Cori Shreve took a long shot from 25 yards out. The ball sailed in the back of the net just over goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel's hands for the early lead.
The Bulldogs immediately put the pressure on Sacramento State's defense creating close calls. Molly Nizzoli had several great crosses setting the Bulldogs up in the offensive third of the field.
Junior Krissy Looney had a great attempt on goal late in the first half. Defender Bianca Lopez carried the ball down the field and flicked it outside to Bradlee DeShane. DeShane crossed the ball to Looney who headed the ball toward the goal and hit the cross bar.
The afternoon heat didn't slow down the Bulldog offense from attacking goal. DeShane and Looney gave Fresno State several close calls late in the first half. Entering the half time break the bulldogs trailed Sacramento State, 1-0.
In the 76th minute of the game Shea Roberts scored an insurance goal for the Hornets and increasing their lead to 2-0. She shot through the defenders and hit the bottom left corner of the goal.
Looney led the team with four shots, three of which were on goal. DeShane contributed three shots. The Bulldogs outshot the Hornets, 8-6.
Lopez filled in on the backline and created offensive attacks by winning the ball and carrying it up field before passing it off down the sideline.
"Bianca Lopez stepped into the backline and filled in a spot for us," said Zwaschka. "She gave unbelievable effort and from that position was one of more threatening players. She definitely went above and beyond what was asked of her."
Revel recorded three saves in the game and remains in second place in career shutouts at Fresno State.
The Bulldogs hit the road for their final non-conference match against St. Mary's on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m.
"We Are Your Team" - The Bulldogs travel to St. Mary's to close out the non-conference schedule on Wednesday, September 30th at 4pm. The Bulldogs return home on Friday, October 9th as they host New Mexico State at 7pm in Bulldog Stadium.
