FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team wrapped up the UC Irvine Invitational this weekend against UC Riverside Sunday morning. The Bulldogs lost the final match of the tournament, 1-0. The `Dogs are 0-5 in the 2009 season.
"We came out a little bit nervous today," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "Early in the match we conceded shots to Riverside that we didn't need to. After they scored the team settled down and played with poise. By the time we got into the second half we threw everything at them including a shot hitting the cross bar in the final seconds of the match. The girls are putting too much pressure on themselves and this week we will work towards breaking the ice."
In the 11th minute of the game Kayla Troesh scored the lone goal for the Highlanders.
For the first time this season the Bulldogs outshot their opponent. The `Dogs recorded 11 shots while UC Riverside had seven shots. Fresno State had four shots on goal.
Sophomore Kendall VanDine led the pack with three shots against Highlander goalkeeper Jessica White. Freshmen Callie Hancock, Vanessa Gonzalez and Bianca Lopez contributed four of the 11 shots. Sophomore midfielder Laura Dodd added a shot. Juniors Krissy Looney and Nicole Duff came off the bunch taking one and two shots, respectively.
Hancock continues to lead the team with shots taken this season. She has eight while VanDine has five in 2009.
Junior Kaitlyn Revel recorded four saves against the Highlanders. UC Riverside's goalkeeper also recorded four saves. Revel has 35 saves on the season and 219 career saves. She is third in Fresno State history. Revel needs 26 more saves to move into second place.
The Bulldogs return to action when they battle CSU Bakersfield for the Valley Cup on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
