FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference named 10 Bulldogs Academic All-WAC honorees for the 2009 cross country season.
"At the beginning of the year, we set goals for our performances at meets and for our performance the classroom," said cross country coach Sean McManus. "Both the men's and women's teams achieved their team goal GPAs this season and putting 10 people on the Academic All-WAC list proves they are taking it to heart."
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. Because freshmen and transfers cannot earn the award until they have completed a full academic year at the school, those eligible student-athletes will be honored with the academic honors for the spring sports.
Five men represented Fresno State on the conference's academic awards list. Eric Battles, Max Hernandez, Mitchell Pfyl, Frank Sanders and Paul Zwama all earned Academic All-WAC honors.
Sanders, the team's only senior, picked up the sixth Academic All-WAC honor of his career, his third from cross country. Battles, Hernandez and Pfyl all picked up their second such honor, having picked up the honor in the 2008 cross country season.
Battles was also named an Emerging Scholar by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi this last fall.
The women also had five honorees including Stevie Brumwell, Marissa McPhail, Daysi Cruz, Roxanne Sellick and Julianne Warmerdam.
Sellick earned the honor for the sixth time during her career running for both the track and field and the cross country teams. It is her third Academic All-WAC honor as a member of the cross country team.
McPhail, a senior, earned the honor for the third time in her career. Brumwell, Cruz and Warmerdam were all first-time honorees.
"I am very proud of the student-athletes for their hard work both on the course and in the classroom," said McManus. "It's great to see that they are committed to both their athletics and their academics."
