Bulldogs Nipped By Pack

FRESNO, Calif. - In an intense and dramatic finish, Fresno State forced the meet's outcome to come down to the final race, but Nevada surged to key wins down the stretch and secured the Pack's 157-143 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Nevada led by nine points entering the final event of the meet and the Wolf Pack's 400-yard freestyle relay team pulled ahead for the first place finish, while Fresno State finished second and third, respectively, in the deciding relay contest.
During the meet, the `Dogs recorded a total of six first place finishes and ten second places.
"We swam great today and very competitively," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "We were in the hunt with Nevada and are disappointed because we want to win. Most importantly we came together as a team and that's what we need to do. I am really proud of everyone."
Fresno State began the dual meet with a bang as the 400 Medley Relay team clocked in at 3:55.31 for a first place finish.
They `Dogs continued the rest of the meet with a fiercely competitive attitude. Brittany Buna won the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking her Bulldog career best swim with a time of 10:38.79.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Fresno State went one-two-three with their finishes. Dani Yoho led the `Dogs and earned the first place finish. Brooke Fuller and Kat Vietti finished second and third, giving their team a boost.
The `Dogs completed another one-two-three finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Michelle Dockendorf clocked a 2:20.58 for first place and her best time this season. Britney Vogel and Sarah Pino finished second and third.
"It was impressive to have one-two-three finishes in the 200 breast and 50 free," said Fleck. "I am proud of our girls and I feel like we are in a really good place right now and only going to get better."
Senior Stephanie Hatayama swam a Bulldog career best in the 100-yard freestyle race and notched a third place finish for her team.
"Our times are a lot faster at this point in the season than they were last year and that's what it's all about," said Fleck.
Bulldog divers, Hannah Prigge and Kendra Weeks, competed on the springboards for Fresno State's diving events. Prigge scored a 228.75 in the 1-meter dive and a 203.62 in the 3-meter.
Fresno State is now 1-1 on the season and Nevada moved to 1-2 on the year. After starting the season with a pair of home meets, the Bulldogs will visit Idaho (Nov. 5) and Washington State (Nov. 6) when they return to action next weekend.
