Dogs Battle UCF in NCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES - The Fresno State women's soccer team ended its unbeaten streak of eight games in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs lost to No. 4 seed UCF 2-1. The Dogs end the season with an overall record of 9-9-5.
This is the fourth NCAA Tournament in school history for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Vanessa Gonzalez scored the lone goal for the Dogs. It is the first goal scored in the NCAA Tournament since 1999, when Fresno State lost 2-1 to Cal Poly.
Gonzalez recorded the first shot of the match. A free kick from Lauren Lindstrom was played into the box and deflected back to Gonzalez for the shot.
UCF countered moments later, but first-team All-WAC goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel came up with the save.
The Knights took an early lead in the 13th minute of the first half. A UCF player took a shot and Revel came up with a big save, but another Knight capitalized on the ricochet taking the lead 1-0.
Senior Claudia Cardenas had a beautiful finish to the back of the net in the 19th minute, but was called offside as the Dogs trailed 1-0.
The Dogs took control of the ball earning most of the balls in the air. Fresno State held possession of the ball for most the half keeping the Knights defense on their toes.
Heading into the half time break, the Bulldogs trailed 1-0. Revel recorded four saves and allowed her first goal in over 384 minutes.
Gonzalez and Janna Sadowitz recorded the only shots of the half for the Dogs. The Knights outshot Fresno State 11-2 in the first half, but the Dogs dominated possession.
The Knights opened the second half with another goal increasing their lead 2-0.
In the 76th minute, the Dogs cut the Knights lead in half 2-1. Gonzalez beat a defender took it down the middle of the field and drilled into the goal from long range. The midfielder has two goals on the season.
The Dogs won the 2010 WAC Tournament and earned the automatic bid into the tournament. It is the first NCAA appearance under second year head coach Brian Zwaschka and it's the second appearance in three years for Fresno State.
Revel finished the match with seven saves. Gonzalez led the team in shots against UCF with two.
The Dogs graduate 10 seniors after this season. The seniors won two WAC titles and made two NCAA appearances in their careers.
