FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs began their first of two head to head competitions today at the New Mexico State Equestrian facility. The Dogs competed against the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs today in Equitation Over Fences and Western Horsemanship and will conclude the match up tomorrow morning when they compete in Equitation on the Flat and Western Reining. At the end of the first half of competition Fresno State is trailing Georgia 7-1.
"Today was a very long day but I am very happy with the way all of the ladies rode," said English coach Julia Scrivani.
The day started with a head to head match against No. 3 Georgia and No. 10 New Mexico State. The Aggies fell to the Georgia Bulldogs 15-1. The Fresno State Bulldogs then jumped into the arena to begin their battle against the No.3 team in the nation. Junior captain Kimberly Hewson Budnik was the only Bulldog to earn her point and defeated her opponent 84-83 in Equitation Over Fences.
"Kimmy rode beautifully," Scrivani said. "She is a strong competitor and she went in the arena and proved that today."
Hewson Budnik will compete in the Equitation on the Flat tomorrow against Michelle Morris. Morris was the nation's individual champion in Equitation on the Flat last season.
After the Bulldogs conclude their competition with Georgia tomorrow, they will gallop right back into the arena to take on the No. 10 New Mexico State Aggies.
"We received great comments from the judges today," said Western Coach Stephanie Reeves. "Everyone rode very well and we are ready to compete again tomorrow."
