FRESNO, Calif. - There isn't much that junior pitcher Morgan Melloh hasn't done in her short Bulldog career, but in game one of the Fresno State Kick-Off on Saturday she picked up her first career no-hitter in the 1-0 win over Pacific.
The No. 25 `Dogs also defeated Sacramento State in their second game of the day, 3-2. Fresno State improves to 4-0 on the year.
"Morgan was awesome last year, she did well and got a one-hitter in the last inning at Pacific and I knew she was very focused up there today and she did a great job," said head coach Margie Wright.
Wright was honored in a pre-game ceremony for her 600th win at Bulldog Diamond in last night's game one victory.
The Fresno State Kick-Off concludes on Sunday as the `Dogs take on Pacific at noon and Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
Game One
Melloh became the 17th Bulldog and the first since Robin Mackin on March 8, 2007, to throw a no-hitter. It was the 63rd no-hitter in school history.
Melloh had 10 strikeouts in the game to go along with the 11 she had on Friday night vs. Santa Clara. She had three walks in the game.
"I didn't really pay attention to the no-hitter," Melloh said. "I was just out here doing my job and my defense had my back."
Andrea Ortega got the first hit of the game for either team with a single to the left side in the bottom of the second off of Pacific starter Shaina Brock. A double by catcher Caitlin Stiglich drove in Ortega for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
The `Dogs third hit in the game came from shortstop Haley Gilleland.
Game Two
A two-out single by Michelle Moses in the bottom of the seventh led the `Dogs to a 3-2 victory in game two over Sacramento State as Brooke Phipps scored after two sacrifices by Gilleland and Jody Badorine.
The first hit of the game for either team was a two-out single by third baseman Nicole Angene in the bottom of the second inning. Gilleland got her second hit of the day in the bottom of the third inning.
Sacramento State took a 2-0 lead off of Bulldog starter Moses who allowed two runs, both unearned in the fourth inning. Moses had seven strikeouts in three and one-thirds innings.
Mackenzie Oakes entered in the circle to replace her. It marked the first time the `Dogs had trailed this year. Oakes picked up the win, her second of the season.
Badorine led off the bottom of the fourth inning being hit by a pitch. The next pitch to Moses she drilled up the middle.
Courtney Moore drew a walk to load the bases against Hornet pitcher Megan Schaefer.
A sacrifice fly to right field by Ortega drove in one run to get the `Dogs on the board.
Stiglich singled to lead off the fifth and was followed by Becca Walker who hit up the middle and forced the Hornets to switch pitchers as Shelby Voelz entered the game.
A walk to Gilleland loaded the bases and a second walk to Moses tied the game at 2-2.
Moses and Stiglich each had two hits in the game.
