Melloh Strikes Out 12

PALO ALTO, Calif. - In its first road game of the 2010 season, the No. 17 Fresno State softball team dropped a tough 5-0 game to Illinois at the Smith Family Stadium on the campus of Stanford Saturday afternoon.
The `Dogs fall to 6-1 and Illinois improves to 7-1.
Illinois took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning off of Bulldog starting pitcher Morgan Melloh. Two of the runs were unearned because of an error. Meredith Hackett led off the inning for the Illini with a single. After the error, singles by Danielle Vaji, Danielle Zymkowitz and Hope Howell and a Melloh walk gave the Illini their runs. Illinois got two more in the fifth.
Melloh had 12 strikeouts in the game.
The `Dogs had seven hits off of Illinois pitcher Monica Perry, including two by sophomore Andrea Ortega. The other Bulldog hits came from Haley Gilleland, Jody Badorine, Michelle Moses, Caitlin Stiglich and Rebecca Walker.
