HONOLULU- The Fresno State women's basketball team won a school record 10th straight game and beat Hawai'i 78-69 at the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 1,643 people.
The Bulldogs are now 18-5 and 9-0 in WAC while the Rainbow Wahine dropped to 9-13 and 3-6 in conference.
"We had great mental toughness," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "It was an emotional and physical game and they didn't lose their cool. I was real proud of that."
The 18-5 start by the Bulldogs ties the school record with the 1986-87 team for the best start in school history.
Hayley Munro led the Bulldogs with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds and Jaleesa Ross had 22 points, five rebounds and a career-best seven steals in the victory. Munro scored 13 of her 24 points from the free throw line.
"It's the best shot in the game and to her credit she did a great job of making them," Wiggin said. "She defended as well as she offended tonight which a lot of people don't get credit for that. Her free throws got us going."
Ross' 22 points moved her into seventh place on the schools' all-time scoring list as she now has 1,279 points.
Fresno State shot 41 percent from the field and out rebounded Hawai'i 34-29. The Rainbow Wahine shot 46 percent from the field and turned the ball over 23 times.
The Bulldogs led 52-50 with 11 minutes left in the game when they went on a 14-5 run to lead 68-55 with 5:37 left in the game after a 3-point play by Munro. The 13 point lead was the biggest lead of the game.
"Hawai'i did a great job of playing hard and smart," Wiggins said. "We were just trying to stop them from getting open looks and we didn't do a real good job of that. Offensively, we got to the free throw line a whole lot. We got a few more layups and quite worrying about the three-point shot."
UH got within six in the final two minutes of the game but the Bulldogs connected on their free throws to seal the victory.
The Bulldogs led 35-30 at halftime.
"We Are Your Team"- The Bulldogs return to the court to host Idaho on Wednesday at 7 p.m. For ticket information log onto gobulldogs.com.
