FRESNO, Calif. - On Saturday afternoon the Fresno State lacrosse team gave the Red Wave a glimpse of what to expect, as it picked up a 12-9 against the Central Valley Men's Lacrosse Club in an exhibition game.
But the Fresno State head coach Sue Behme emphasized that is not what the day was all about. The Bulldogs set up barrels for fans to donate food to the Community Food Bank and there was a booth available to accept donations to the Central Valley Susan Komen Foundation.
"It was a chance to give back to the community and that's what lacrosse is all about," Behme said. "Nationwide, programs have made an emphasis on giving back to the community."
It was also an opportunity to spread understanding and interest in the game of lacrosse in the Central Valley for both genders.
"It was a very special day," Behme said. "We had the opportunity to bring the men's and women's games together and it was a great day of lacrosse."
Due to some differences between the men's and women's rules, particularly regarding physical contact, Behme and her staff gave the men a crash course in the women's game before they started the exhibition.
Despite the friendly nature of the competition, the Bulldogs remained focused and looked sharp.
In her first game in a Bulldog jersey, the men couldn't find an answer for freshman Sara Weber, as she cut up their defense for a team-high six goals on the day.
Amanda Cross added three goals, Margaret Wolford constributed two goals and Lauren Natale had one goal.
"We drove in, attacked the goal well, created off of our offensive formations and capitalized," Behme said about her team's production.
She also pointed to ball possession and faceoffs as positive points on the day.
The men took a 7-6 lead into halftime, but the Bulldogs outscore them 6-2 in the second half to collect a 12-9 victory.
"We knew we had to play with a lot of heart and come out strong in the second half," Behme said. "We played with a lot of enthusiasm in the second half. We need to play like that for 60 minutes."
The `Dogs will play another exhibition game on Feb. 20 against the Alumni before starting an east coast road trip starting on Feb. 26 at LaSalle and ending on March 7 at Navy.
Fresno State's first regular season home game will be on March 11 against Detroit.
