FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball sophomore pitcher Mackenzie Oakes (Bakersfield, Calif.), threw the first perfect game of her career in a 3-0 win over Georgetown in the `Dogs final game of day three at the Bayer CropScience at Bulldog Diamond on Saturday night. It is the first perfect game by a 'Dog since Jamie Southern threw one in an 8-0 run-ruled victory over Dartmouth on March 25, 2005. This is the 14th perfect game in Fresno State history and Oakes is the eighth different Bulldog to pitch one.
"What can you say about a perfect game," head coach Margie Wright said. "She was right on and every pitch she executed and really did a great job. She had great defensive plays behind her and produced a lot of infield grounders and that's what she's good at."
Fresno State improves to 14-8 on the year and is a perfect 3-0 in the tournament with two wins on the night, a 10-1 win over Cal State Northridge in six innings and a 3-0 victory over Georgetown.
Game One
Cal State Northridge took an early 1-0 lead in the first with two doubles by Karla Chaparro and Christina Saenz off of Morgan Melloh.
Haley Gilleland was hit by a pitch and a single by Michelle Moses off of Hannah Fraijo put the `Dogs in scoring position. Gilleland scored on the next at bat by Courtney Moore who earned the RBI to tie the game.
The `Dogs took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after a walk to Caitlin Stiglich and Rebecca Walker's first career triple which scored pinch runner Diane Runge. Walker scored on an error by the CSUN second baseman.
The second triple of the game, this time by Gilleland led off the bottom of the fifth. A double by Andrea Ortega boosted the `Dogs to a 4-1 lead. A single by Stiglich drove in another for a 5-1 lead.
After she was hit by a pitch, Walker got her first career stolen base in the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Gilleland and Ortega and a single by Moses put the `Dogs on top 8-1.
Moore ended the game with a two-run home run to center field.
The `Dogs had 11 hits, led by Moses with three and Gilleland and Ortega each with two.
Melloh had nine strikeouts and improves to 8-5 in the circle.
Game Two
Jody Badorine hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the third and she scored off of a single by Ortega for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
Singles by Badorine and Ortega and a triple by Moses in the bottom of the fifth drove in two more runs for the `Dogs for the 3-0 win over Georgetown.
The `Dogs had three runs on seven hits, led by Ortega and Badorine with two each.
Oakes improves to 6-3 in the circle as she allowed no runs on no hits with no errors. She pitched a perfect 7.0 innings and struck out five.
This is the first seven-inning perfect game since Southern vs. Texas A&M on Feb. 15, 2004 in Phoenix, Ariz., and the first seven-inning perfect game at home since Southern vs. San Jose State on April 13, 2002.
It is the second no-hitter of the season for Oakes as she threw the 65th no-hitter in school history. She threw her first no-hitter vs. Sacramento State at Bulldog Diamond on opening weekend this year (Feb. 14) in a 6-0 victory.
She becomes the first Bulldog since Robin Mackin in 2006 to throw two no-hitters in one year and the first since Southern in 2005 to throw a perfect game and a no-hitter in the same season.
Other Bulldogs to throw perfect games are: Southern (4), Wende Ward (2), Melanie Parrent (2), Amanda Scott (2), Barbara Cambria (1), Terry Carpenter (1) and Lindsay Parker (1).
"To be honest I didn't even know what was going on so I knew I had to come out aggressive in the seventh and finish it off," said Oakes. "It feels great! I'm pumped but we still have two more games left in this tournament and we need to take this momentum and build on it tomorrow."
