FRESNO, Calif. - The improvement is noticeable on the field and coach Sue Behme is excited about what she is seeing. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs played what Behme called the best game of the year and lost a close 9-6 game to Iona at Bulldog Stadium.
"I thought we played a great game," Behme said. "It was the best game we played all year. I think we possessed the ball well. We still need to play better team defense. If we can do that and stop some of the drives and capitalize on the other end we are going to win some games. We are a dangerous team. We just have to find a way to win. Our time will come."
Fresno State outshot the Gaels 25-24 and had 22 ground balls and 10 saves. The Dogs also had a season-low 17 turnovers on the evening.
"We really reduced the number of turnovers," Behme said. "Everything was greatly improved. I am really proud of this team. They did a great job today."
Margaret Wolford and Amanda Cross each had two goals and one assist while Lauren Natale and Heather Jack each scored goals. Jack, Cross and Jennifer Rose each won four ground balls and Cross caused a team-best three turnovers. Goalkeeper Katie Wilbur came up with 10 saves on the evening.
Iona jumped out to a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game but the Dogs came back and tied the contest and one on a goal by Natale. Iona then took a 3-1 lead before Wolford scored off a pass from Cross with 16:10 left in the first half.
Trailing 4-2, Wolford scored a goal with 3:23 left in the first half to cut the deficit to 4-3 at halftime. Iona led 7-4 halfway through the second half before Cross scored with 9:53 left, cutting the Iona lead to 7-5. Iona went up 9-5 before Cross tallied the team's final goal with 2:33 to play in the contest.
"We Are Your Team"- Fresno State returns to the field on March 23 against Cincinnati at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs then host Stanford on April 2. For ticket information click on the tickets link at the top of the page.
