`Dogs Battle DePaul in Extra Innings

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team battled the Blue Demons of DePaul on Saturday night at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., and fell 3-2 in eight innings.
The 'Dogs took a 2-1 lead after two innings and that remained the score until the bottom of the seventh.
Bulldog shortstop Haley Gilleland led off the game with a solo home run to left field, her second of the season. Andrea Ortega followed with a double to left field. She reached third and scored on two illegal pitches by DePaul pitcher Bree Brown.
DePaul got its first run in the bottom of the second inning and scored in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings and the international tie breaker rules.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Demons scored the winning run on an error.
All three runs allowed by Bulldog pitcher Morgan Melloh were unearned. She had six strikeouts in the game and allowed just four hits. Melloh is now 9-8 on the season.
Fresno State had five hits in the game, led by Gilleland with two. The other hits came from Ortega, Courtney Moore and Brooke Phipps.
Fresno State is 18-11 on the year and concludes play in the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday vs. New Mexico at 1:30 p.m. Live audio and stats available at www.goulldogs.com for free.

Fresno State Athletics is giving its fans a chance to vote for their favorite student-athletes from the past decade (2000-2009) in baseball and softball. "We Are Your Team" - Bulldog Softball will make their final appearance in the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday, March 21st when they face the New Mexico Lobos at 1:30pm.
