Individuals Shine in Spring Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team is halfway through their spring season after competing in a tournament at Sacramento State on Saturday.
Spring tournaments do not count towards individual or team statistics or standings. This competition allows the returning players to grow and work on their skills together in the off season.
The `Dogs are competing in four spring tournament this season and the second this weekend gave the `Dogs some stiff competition. Fresno State faced off against Pacific, Cal, the host Hornets and Sonoma State.
The `Dogs took on Pacific first in what was their best match of the day, despite dropping both sets.
"We competed pretty well with Pacific who we played first," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "Our defense was better than I've ever seen it. Our defense has improved quite a bit and we were able to dig heavy hit balls with control."
Fresno State took on Cal and Sacramento State in the middle matches dropping them both.
"In the morning we played really tough teams and it was good to see where we stacked up," Netherby-Sewell said.
The `Dogs got their first set win of the day vs. Sonoma State in the final match, earning the split.
Individually, Netherby-Sewell was really impressed with the play of her student-athletes.
"As the day wore on I was really please with the efforts from Kelly Mason," Netherby-Sewell added. "She is going to be a good libero for us next year. Meghan Moss defensively showed great improvement with her ability to control heavy hit balls."
"Lauren Berger is going to be a senior next year and has been through a lot but this tournament she really turned it around." Netherby-Sewell said. "She was one of our most consistent attackers and I was really pleased with her performance."
"Marissa Brand, out of all of our freshmen, is the most composed under pressure," Netherby-Sewell added. "I'm really excited to see her grow in the next few months."
