FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State squared off against No. 12 California on Thursday in Berkeley, Calif., with the Golden Bears picking up a 7-0 victory.
Two Bulldogs pushed their singles match to a third set.
After dropping the first set, 6-1, freshman Bianca Modoc battled back to win the second set against Cal's Annie Goransson, 6-2. Goransson cam out on top in the final set, 6-2.
Another Bulldog freshman Julia Gragera-Cano won her first set, 2-6, against Cal's Tayler Davis. But the Bear won the next two sets 6-0, 6-3.
"We played hard against a very good California team today," Fresno State head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "We hanged with them for a while in doubles and had some close battles in singles. This is the first time Cal has beat us since 2003, not very many teams can claim that accomplishment."
The Bulldogs will next be in action on Saturday in a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech and Boise State in Boise, Idaho.
