`Dogs Win in Reno

RENO, Nev. - The Fresno State offense came out swinging Friday night recording 12 hits, three of which were home runs. The Bulldogs (23-16, 6-3 WAC) beat Nevada (20-14-1, 1-3-1 WAC) 8-3 in the first game of the series.
Sophomore Dusty Robinson hit two home runs, while Jordan Ribera went 3-for-5 and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. This is the second game this season that Ribera has come within one hit of the cycle.
Bobby Coyle, Danny Muno and Garrett Weber also had a big night at the plate recording two or more hits.
The pitching duo of Josh Poytress and Sean Bonesteele struck out eight batters and together threw seven scoreless innings.
The Bulldog offense scored right away taking an early lead. Muno led off the game with a walk. Weber hit a stand up double allowing Muno to score easily from first base giving the `Dogs the lead, 1-0.
Robinson increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-run home run over the center field wall.
Nevada answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning cutting the Bulldogs lead, 3-1.
The Bulldogs turned a 5-3 double play to end the second inning. The `Dogs have turned 46 double plays and are among the top in the nation at fielding double plays.
The Wolf Pack tied the game in the bottom of the third inning scoring two runs.
Weber threw a runner out at home plate to keep the game tied at three runs apiece.
Poytress started on the mound for Fresno State. The sophomore struck out five batters in five innings and earned his sixth win of the year. He limited Nevada to two earned runs and three runs overall.
In the fourth inning, the bulldogs regained the lead. Muno hit his second stand up double of the game. Weber followed with his second RBI double of the night bringing in Muno extending the `Dogs lead, 4-3.
Ribera drove in two runs with a double to right center field and the Bulldogs lead, 6-3.
Sean Bonesteele came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning. The senior threw four hitless inning of relief striking out three batters. He recorded his first save of the 2010 season.
Ribera hit a solo home run over the right field wall giving the Bulldogs their largest lead of the night, 7-3. The junior has 16 home runs on the season and coming into tonight's game was three home runs behind the national leader.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs recorded two outs after striking out a Wolf Pack batter and then catching a Nevada runner attempting to steal second base.
Robinson hit his second home run of the evening over the right field wall increasing the Bulldogs lead, 8-3.
Bonesteele retired the final three batters in order and Fresno State won the first game of the series, 8-3.
