`Dogs Take Mustangs to the Edge

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State finished the 2010 regular season with a home dual with No. 61 Cal Poly on Saturday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, with the Mustangs picking up a hard-fought 4-3 victory.
The match also served as Senior Day to honor Fresno State's two seniors -- Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova.
The 95th-ranked Renata Kucerkova celebrated the occasion by picking up a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 win over No. 100 Suzie Matzenauer. The match was her second-straight victory over a ranked opponent, after beating Boise State's 46th-ranked Pichittra Thongdach, a week ago.
"I'm proud of Renata for finishing with two quality wins to end the regular season and prepare for the WAC Tournament," Fresno State head coach Simon Thibodeau said.
Kucerkova was also victorious in doubles, as she teamed sophomore Laura Pola to defeat No. 32 Brittany Blalock and Matzenauer, 8-3.
Pola also defeated Blalock in singles, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, in the final match of the afternoon.
Bulldog freshman Melissa McQueen continued her hot streak, as she knocked off the Mustangs' Steffi Wong, 6-1, 7-5.
Despite not fielding a full team, due to injuries, the Bulldogs battled hard and nearly overcame the odds.
"It was a great effort from the team," Thibodeau said. "Our top 4 players really tuned up, which will help us as we prepare for the WAC Tournament."
The Bulldogs will next be in action in the first round of the WAC Tournament, when they host New Mexico State on April 30 at the Wathen Tennis Center.
