`Dogs Advance to WAC Championship

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Bulldog softball team will play Hawai'i in the WAC Tournament Championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. PST at the New Mexico State Softball Complex after a 6-5 victory over Boise State in an elimination game. Fresno State improves to 38-18 on the season.

Haley Gilleland led off the game for the `Dogs with an infield single to the left side. After her 18th stolen base of the season, she scored on a single up the middle by Michelle Moses for an early 1-0 lead.
Nicole Angene led off the second inning with a double to left center. She reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Gilleland as the `Dogs went up 2-0.
Boise State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Holly Bourke scored after a single by Tazz Weatherly. Bourke reached on a walk.
Weatherly scored on a double by Kelly Caplan to tie the game at 2-2.
Becca Walker hit her fifth double of the season to lead off the sixth for Fresno State. An infield single by Diane Runge put two on with no outs.
Gilleland reached on an error as Walker scored from second and re-took the lead at 3-2. After an intentional walk to Moses, a sacrifice fly by Courtney Moore to center field scored Runge from third for the fourth run.
Vanessa Alvarez singled for Boise State in the Broncos half of the sixth inning. She scored on a triple by Christina Capobianco. Boise State had the bases loaded with one out but a strikeout by Moses and a fly out to Runge in center kept the `Dogs' lead intact.
The `Dogs got two runs back in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead after two errors by the Bronco shortstop that allowed Nicole Angene and Walker to reach. Kaylan Pollard entered to pinch run for Angene. Pollard and Walker scored on a double by Gilleland and another Bronco error.
Jessi Hanna singled for Boise State in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a two-run home run by Kathy Cox to center field as the Broncos got within one.
Morgan Melloh entered with no outs in the seventh to replace Moses and got the first two batters to fly out and ground out. After a walk, Melloh got the next batter to ground out to Angene at third for the victory.
Moses picked up the win, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. She improves 10-1 on the season.
Melloh picked up her second save of the season in 1.0 inning of work.
The `Dogs had 12 hits in the game led by Gilleland with four and Stiglich with three.
Aubray Zell got the loss for Boise State as the Broncos ended their season at 29-32. Zell allowed four runs, two earned in 5.0 innings with 11 hits. Lela Work entered in relief and allowed two runs on one hit in 2.0 innings.
