FRESNO, Calif. - After a horrific first round of the NCAA regional championships, the Fresno State men's golf team had a better day Friday.
The Dogs shot a team total of 302, 16 shots better than their opening round. Fresno State remains in 13th place with the final round scheduled to begin Saturday morning at the Golf Mountain Course in Bremerton, Wash.
"We played better today," head coach Mike Watney said after the round. "Our top two guys, Bhavik and Bryan, played better, and our two young guys struggled. This is a course that can really take you out if you aren't on your game. It's been a good experience and we have one more round. With all five guys coming back, playing in the NCAAs will be good for us in the future."
Bhavik Patel and Bryan Hogan each shot rounds of 73 to lead the Bulldogs. Hogan (79-73--152) is in 47th place at 8-over par. Patel jumped from 65th place to T48 heading into the final round. Junior Michael Gideon (80-75--155) improved eight spots and is tied for 57th place. Brian Sunker (79-81--160) and Tim Toste (87-81--168) are tied for 72nd and 74th, respectively.
The Dogs conclude the final round Saturday morning with 18 holes at the Gold Mountain Course. Rain has been prevalent the last two days but sunshine is predicted for the Pacific Northwest for the final day of the tournament.
Washington, playing on its home course, extended its five shot lead heading into today to 18 strokes after a round of 283 (5-under par). The Huskies were the only team under par for the day and are 7-under par after the first two rounds. They have a commanding lead over Illinois (+9), USC (+10) and San Diego (+10). The top five teams from each of the six regional sites will advance to the NCAA Finals in Chattanooga, Tenn.
