WESTWOOD, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team fought hard in the Los Angeles Regional Championship at Easton Stadium vs. No. 5 UCLA but fell in the end 7-2 to end the season with a 41-21 overall record.
"I thought our team played very hard this weekend and I'm very proud of them," said head coach Margie Wright.
GiOnna DiSalvatore walked to lead off the game for UCLA. She reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Moncia Harrison and got to third on a foul fly out to left field by Megan Langenfeld. Michelle Moses got Andrea Harrison to strikeout and to get out of the first inning.
Haley Gilleland led off the Bulldogs half of the first by reaching second on an error by the UCLA right fielder. Moses hit her 18th home run of the season to left field to give the `Dogs an early 2-0 lead. It was the first home run of the season allowed by Bruins pitcher Aleah Macon.
UCLA tied the game in the second after with a two-run home run by Samantha Camuso to right field. Dani Yudin also scored after a walk. The Bruins had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning, but Moses struck out Langenfeld to get out of the jam.
Caitlin Stiglich led off the fourth with a double to left field. Ortega doubled to right center in the fifth for the third hit of the game by the Bulldogs.
UCLA took the lead in the sixth after a bloop single to left by DiSalvatore and a three-run home run by Monica Harrison to left field for a 6-2 lead. All runs were unearned due to an error.
"In a game like this you can't pinpoint any one thing," said Wright. "In games like this that are tight there are going to be mistakes. Everybody is responsible for something."
Courtney Moore hit a single to lead off the sixth and Kaylan Pollard entered to pinch run. Caitlin Stiglich then drew a walk to put two on with no outs. Alexis Lujan singled to left to load the bases. The `Dogs would leave the bases loaded.
With two outs in the seventh, Julie Burney hit a solo home run for UCLA to take a 7-2 lead.
Gilleland took the first pitch of the seventh to left field and stole second base but the `Dogs were unable to continue the game.
Moses got the loss for the `Dogs, just her third of the season (12-3). She allowed just three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
"Michelle pitched very well," Wright added. "They have a good hitting team and she got some key strikeouts and key outs and I can't say enough positive about our team this weekend."
Macon got the win for UCLA to improve to 10-1. She allowed just one earned run on six hits with 12 strikeouts.
UCLA (43-11) advances to next week's Super Regionals vs. Louisiana-Lafayette.
