FRESNO, Calif. - A former Bulldog is just 18 holes from winning one of professional golf's four major events. Nick Watney, a three-time All-American at Fresno State holds a 3-shot lead after 54 holes at the 2010 PGA Championship at the Whistling Straits Course in Kohler, Wisc.
Watney, a three-time WAC Player of the Year who won 10 tournaments in his college career, has already won twice on the PGA tour in his young career.
Entering the day 1-stroke off the lead, Watney shot a 66 on Saturday and stands at 13-under par for the tournament. He will be paired with Dustin Johnson in the final round which can be seen live on CBS.
Watney made eight birdies on his round and putted very well during the round, in a pairing with 36-hole leader Matt Kuchar and PGA Tour veteran Jim Furyk. Watney is one of 19 players to make the cut at all three of majors this season. He tied for seventh place at both the Master's and British Open tournaments.
Watney was one of college golf's top performers in his career at Fresno State, where he played for Hall of Fame Coach Mike Watney, his uncle. He is the only golfer in WAC history to win the Joe Kearney Award, given annually to the top athlete in the Western Athletic Conference.
