FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team went 2-0 at the 2010 Miner Classic hosted by UTEP after beating Texas State 1-0 on Sunday. The Bulldogs and Bobcats played 114 minutes and two overtime periods before forward Janna Sadowitz scored giving the `Dogs the win.
It is the first goal of the year for the senior, who had three goals last season. After earning two-straight wins the Bulldogs improve to 2-2 on the season.
"We had a good game plan going into today that was us being aggressive towards the goal," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "The team played creating chances on goal and keeping the pressure on Texas State. I told them that we needed to stay patient because we were doing everything right. It was a big maturity step for the team as they stayed patient and stuck with the plan. Finally, we were able to get the goal."
The Bulldogs took control early in the game and fired off six shots in the first 14 minutes of the match. The pressure continued through the first half and the `Dogs recorded a total 10 shots.
At halftime the score was tied 0-0. Fresno State out shot the Bobcats 10-1 and Kaitlyn Revel recorded her only save of the day.
The Bulldogs recorded another 10 shots, many of which were close calls and shot right at the Texas State goalkeeper.
Sadowitz led the pack with four shots, all four were on goal. Junior Molly Nizzoli contributed three shots and has a total of 10 this year. Her 10 shots is a team-high in 2010.
Regulation time ended with a 0-0 tie and for the first time in Zwaschka's career, Fresno State headed into overtime.
Four minutes into the second overtime period, Sadowitz scored the game-winning goal lifting the Bulldogs to their second victory this season.
Nicole Duff sent the ball wide to Bradlee DeShane, who worked the ball down the sidelines and served it to the goal. Several Bulldogs were crashing the net and Sadowitz connected to the far post for the go ahead goal.
Sadowitz leads the team in points with three (one goal and one assist). DeShane and Duff were credited with the assists on the play. DeShane leads the team in assists with two after recording one assist in each game this weekend.
Preseason All-WAC selection, Revel, earned her first shutout in the 1-0 win over the Bobcats. She has 25 career shutouts and is the all-time career shutout leader at Fresno State.
The Bulldogs ended the game with 22 shots. The most shots in a single game by the `Dogs is 34, which was set in 2005 against Sam Houston State. The Bobcats recorded four shots and only one was on goal.
"We knew this tournament was going to be a tough, especially opening with the host UTEP," said Zwaschka. "But, we knew if we stuck with our themes and what we have been practicing, we would be fine. Playing like this on the road and the team being able to bond shows the team maturing as a group. To win a tough game on Friday and play a difficult match today shows their perseverance. And, they got the results we wanted, so I am overjoyed. It also gives us more confidence as we head to Florida next week."
Fresno State continues its non-conference schedule Sept. 3-5 in Miami, Fla. at the FIU Tournament hosted by Florida International University. The Bulldogs kick off the action against the Golden Panthers on Friday at 10 p.m. pacific time.
"We Are Your Team" The `Dogs hit the road again for FIU Tournament Sept. 3-5. Fresno State kicks off the tournament against the Golden Panthers on Friday night. The Bulldogs return home on Sept. 12 and play the Aggies of UC Davis. Admission to all soccer games is free for everyone.
