FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team opened the Western Athletic Conference with an overtime loss to San Jose State. The Bulldogs scored first, but lost the match 2-1. The `Dogs are 4-6-1 this season and 0-1 in WAC.
"I thought we played pretty well," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We tried to control the game and did a pretty good job of that. We probably deserved to win, but what is tricky about conference matches is that everybody is good and capable of winning. I was really proud of our defenders for taking on a really big role today. They knew without two starting backs there was going to be some pressure on them and they did really well. I thought that everyone put in a really good effort and it came down to a couple of lapses."
The Bulldogs attacked the Spartan net early in the first half with a beautiful shot from Claudia Cardenas seconds into the match. The San Jose State goalkeeper had a great save keeping the game tied 0-0.
The `Dogs had control of the ball most of the first half and showed great movement from the defensive line to the forwards.
Junior Laura Dodd was inches away from her fourth goal of the year. Her shot hit just wide in the 28th minute of the game.
Midfielder Bradlee DeShane made a great tackle keeping the ball in bounds and passed the ball off to Nicole Duff. Duff took a shot that sailed wide. The Bulldogs recorded a total of three shots in the half.
Preseason All-WAC goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel had three saves in the first half as the `Dogs ended the first 45 minutes in 0-0 tie.
In the second half, Cardenas played a ball to Krissy Looney who passed it on to Janna Sadowitz. Sadowitz took a shot, but the Spartan goalkeeper came up with the save.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the 62nd minute after Nicole Duff scored her third goal of the season. Cardenas took a shot and hit the post. Duff capitalized on the rebound giving the `Dogs the lead 1-0. Cardenas recorded the assist on the play.
In the 72nd minute, San Jose State scored the equalizing goal. Kelsey Lord played the ball to Kayla Santacruz, who broke free and slipped the ball into the back of the net.
The `Dogs continued to pressure the Spartan goal looking for the go ahead goal.
DeShane hit a corner kick and Lauren Lindstrom got her head on the ball, but San Jose State goalkeeper came up with another big save.
Regulation time ended the match in a 1-1 tie and sending the game into overtime.
San Jose State scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute winning the game 2-1. Santacruz scored her second goal of the night for the Spartans.
The Bulldogs finished the game with 10 shots and five shots on goal. Duff, Lindstrom and Cardenas had two shots apiece. Revel ended the game with six saves.
