FRESNO, Calif. - Proving he's one of the world's top amateur players, Fresno State junior Bhavik Patel stands in 34th place after 36 holes of the Australian Master of the Amateurs golf tournament.
Now in its 14th successful year, the Australian Master of the Amateurs 72-hole Championship is considered by many of the Worlds' leading professional and amateur golfers to be the finest Amateur Golf Championship in the world the benchmark by which all other amateur events are now being judged.
Amateurs from around the world will go stroke for stroke against each other in the 2011 Australian Master of the Amateurs 72-hole stroke amateur golf championship, to be held at the Internationally recognized Royal Melbourne Golf Club on Melbourne's legendary sandbelt.
Patel is one of four Americans in the tournament field that includes players from 13 different countries. He entered the tournament ranked No. 49 among amateurs in the world rankings.
A two-time first-team All-WAC selection, Patel opened the tournament with a 76 and followed that up with a 72 on the second round and stands 148, 10 strokes behind New Zealand's Ryan Fox (64-74--138). Patel was one of 11 players to shoot even par or better in the second round.
The tournament has two more rounds and will conclude Friday.
