HONOLULU - The Fresno State volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-16 and 25-18) at No. 11 Hawai'i late Saturday night in the Bulldogs' final visit to the Islands as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
"Tonight was a disappointing effort by us," head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said. "We lacked aggressiveness and we didn't play well as a team."
Hawai'i (14-1, 4-0 WAC) cruised to its seventh straight-set victory of the season and extended its WAC-leading conference win streak to 45 behind a dominant all-around performance by the Rainbow Wahine.
"Self-doubt came into the picture and it took until the third set to start to see Fresno State volleyball really emerge," Netherby-Sewell said. "Next time around we will look to start off the way we finished."
For Fresno State (7-8, 2-1 WAC), the loss snapped the Bulldogs' three-match win streak despite Korrin Wild's fourth-straight double-digit kill effort and another Barbara Alcantara double-digit assist mark before an announced crowd of 7,001.
The 'Dogs had won at Nevada and San Jose State, following a Sept. 22 home triumph over CSU Bakersfield.
Wild and sophomore Lauren Albertson were named by Netherby-Sewell as the week's "Fighting Spirit" honorees.
"Lauren and Korrin were the most vocal throughout the weekend," she said. "Lauren came in and really turned the fifth set around against SJSU. And she came in with a lot of fight and intensity with the match as well. Korrin just shows heart every day and towards the end of the Hawaii match, she let go of a lot of fear despite the opponent."
The contest marked Fresno State's second against a team ranked in the AVCA Top 25 Poll - both losses with the other at then-No. 5 Washington on Sept. 9.
After opening WAC play with the three road matches, the Bulldogs return to the Save Mart Center for this week to face Louisiana Tech on Thursday and New Mexico State on Saturday.
The top six schools in the final conference standings advance to the 2011 WAC Tournament Nov. 21-23 in Las Vegas' Orleans Arena.
